23rd Psalm

King James Version

1The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.

2He maketh me to lie down in green pastures:
he leadeth me beside the still waters.

3He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the
paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

4Yea, though I walk through the valley
of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil: for thou art with me;
thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

5Thou preparest a table before me
in the presence of mine enemies:
thou anointest my head with oil;
my cup runneth over.

6Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
all the days of my life:
and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

23rd Psalm

NIV Version

A psalm of David.

1 The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.

2 He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters,

3 he restores my soul.
He guides me in paths of righteousness
for his name's sake.

4 Even though I walk
through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.

5 You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.

6 Surely goodness and love will follow me
all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

23rd Psalm

Jerusalem Bible

The Good Shepherd
Psalm of David

1Yahwey is my shepherd,
I lack nothing.

2In meadows of green grass he lets me lie,
To the waters of repose he leads me;
there he revives my soul

3He guides me by paths of virtue
for the sake of his name.

4Though I pass through a gloomy valley,
I fear no harm;
beside me your rod and your staff
are there, to hearten me.

5You prepare a table before me
under the eyes of my enemies;
you anoint my head with oil,
my cup brims over.

6Ah, how goodness and kindness pursue me,
every day of my life;
my home, the house of Yahweh,
as long as I live.

The 23rd Psalm written by King David in the Old Testament in many ways foreshadows the ministry of Jesus at the Feeding of the Five Thousand on the far side of the Sea of Galilee on the mountainside. Let’s compare the similarities of the 23rd Psalm to the Feeding of the 5000.

The feeding of the 5,000 is the one miracle, apart from the resurrection, is found in all four of the Gospels; so it must be an important message for all of us!

LOTS OF SHEEP! Five thousand was just the number of men only! The number of women and children were not included.

AMAZING! The size of the crowd is amazing in light of the fact that the neighboring towns of Capernaum and Bethsaida probably had a population of only 2,000 to 3,000 each. NIV Note.

Psalm 23:1
“The Lord is my shepherd;
I shall not want”

SHEEP WITHOUT A SHEPHERD
34When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So he began teaching them many things.
Mark 6:34

Often Jesus displayed compassion before performing a miracle/sign, example: raising Lazarus from the dead. Compassion: To enter into, to share in one’s suffering with the desire and will to help alleviate the suffering.

and healed their sick.
Matthew 14:14

“I tell you the truth, I am the gate for the sheep.”
John 10:7

“I am the good shepherd.
The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.”

John 10:11

“I am the good shepherd;
I know my sheep and my sheep know me."

John 10:14-15

THE SHEEP KNOW HIS VOICE AND
COME WHEN THEY ARE CALLED!

Jesus provides for his sheep,
cares for their needs,
and protects the sheep from harm.

Psalm 23:2
“He maketh me to lie down
in green pastures.
He leadeth me
beside the still waters.”

A PRETTY PLACE FOR A PICNIC!
10Jesus said, "Have the people sit down." There was plenty of grass in that place, and the men sat down, about five thousand of them.
John 6:10

Psalm 23:3
“He restoreth my soul:
He leadeth me
in paths of righteousness
for His name’ sake.”

He welcomed them and spoke to them about the kingdom of God, and healed those who needed healing.
JESUS HEALED THEM BODY & SOUL.

but the crowds learned about it and followed him.
He welcomed them and spoke to them about the kingdom of God,
and healed those who needed healing.

Luke 9:11

Psalm 23:4
Yea, though
I walk through the valley
of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil:
For thou art with me.

He did the same with the fish.

John 6:11

JESUS WILL NOT SEND YOU AWAY EMPTY!!!

Psalm 23:5
“Thou annointest my head with oil;
My cup runnith over.”

12When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, "Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted." 13So they gathered them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten.
John 6:12-13

JEWS REGARDED BREAD AS A GIFT FROM GOD.

“I am the bread of life.

and he who believes in me
will never be thirsty.”

John 6:35

he who believes has everlasting life.

which came down from heaven:

which I will give for the life of the world.”

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name.
Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever.
Amen.
