An Awesome God

Our God is an Awesome God! But can we imagine – God – Creator;
Creator of Heaven and Earth? God creating the entire universe and all that is in it, now that is Awesome! Awesome but hard to fathom.

I don’t believe that the Bible and that science are at odds with one another even though science is something that can only be proven by repeated experiments and Faith is based on what is invisible and unseen.

But can we actually conceive how God created the universe? Awesome but unfathomable! But can we see an Awesome God in the smaller things, the common things we see in our everyday lives?

God gives us eyes to see but too often we are in such a hurry with a
to-do-list that often life is just a blur. In our society being busy is a sign of success. But what could we see if we slowed down and really looked at life in this world through the eyes of God? What does God see that is really Awesome?

God thinks that we are Awesome! God thinks that we are ALL beautiful, that we ALL have value and worth, and that we are ALL here for a purpose. Often we may put ourselves down, have low esteem, and be ashamed of our actions…. But God always sees our full potential! God sees each and every one of us as His adopted Children of God. We are God’s sons and daughters, and God loves ALL of us very much… even when we do not love ourselves… even when we give up on ourselves… God NEVER gives up on us! Having a loving God that draws us closer to Him...
this is the most Awesome thing ever!

God sees us as Children of Light! God sees us as original good;
not as original sin! When God created man on the 6th Day of Creation,

God said it was, “Good. Very Good.”
– Genesis 1:31.

As big as the universe may be… as small as we may seem to be…
God values, God knows, and loves each and every one of us! God knows when every sparrow falls. WOW! That’s AWESOME!

But how can we see some of the Awesome Miracles in our Everyday Lives? Let’s Explore!

The sun has been rising and falling on the earth for millions of years…
but through all time man has found beauty in the morning’s dawn and the evening’s sunset. When we see clouds against crimson red, yellow, and blue skies we see something Awesome… something to where it is like God's warm love embracing you in a gentle breeze upon your face.

Sunrises, Sunsets they happen every day but how often do we notice. The moon and the stars are absolutely stunning if we can get away from the city lights. These are every day – every night occurrences that too often we just take for granted and overlook them!

Every season has its’ own Awesomeness! Winter’s snow, Spring’s showers and rainbows, Summer’s flowers, and Fall’s falling leaves… these are ALL reoccurring miracles in our everyday lives… This is Awesome and it happens every year, every minute, of every day!

Communion is not always held in church! This Yosemite camper had a
Deep Close Communion with God with his experience with the beautiful double rainbow.

“Surely the LORD is in this place,
and I was not aware of it.”

Genesis 28:16

How often are we unaware that God IS in this place;
that God is right where we are standing?

What else is Awesome? Children – babies, an older couple holding hands. Looking in amazement at the stomach of a pregnant woman is Awesome. Actually feeling the baby, the life inside move is even more Awesome. Watching and waiting for the birth of a child is really Awesome.
Babies, children watching them grow… this is Awesome. Even though watching your children grow is filled peril and heartache it is still no less Awesome! Marriage is Awesome… staying married is even more Awesome! Being a Grandparent is really Awesome!

Watching kittens and puppies play is Awesome. Watching an old dog or cat sleep in contentment is Awesome! Relaxing and sitting by the fire… watching the flames dance, listening to the crackle as the wood burns, and smelling the fragrant smoke... that’s Awesome! Watching a fire in the fireplace, or at a campfire are just as Awesome as watching a fire in a BBQ! A lone candle burning in the night... that's really Awesome!

Fireflies, Butterflies, Watching birds fly… now that’s really Awesome. Life in the oceans, life on the earth and underneath the earth (Inchworms, caterpillars, centipedes… all of the creepy-crawly things), and life flying above are ALL Awesome. But how often do we see it?

Watching the waves on the ocean roll in... that's Awesome! But so is watching the rain drip and fall from the roof. Even puddles on the sidewalk are Awesome. Jumping in puddles is even more Awesome!

A Beautiful Day in the Park by Bible Basics.

This is the day that the Lord hath made;
Rejoice and be glad in it.

Psalm 118:24

Yes, God does amazingly Awesome things
in our everyday lives…
all we have to do is just open our eyes.

People sick, hungry, and poor; this is NOT Awesome! Sickness, hunger, and poverty are ALL Injustices. But people who comfort the sick, feed the hungry, and help the poor… THEY ARE AWESOME!

When we lose a loved one it is heartbreaking. But having friends and family come together to help to comfort you… That’s Awesome! When there are great tragedies and disasters around the world… these are heartbreaking. But watching people all over the world come together in common cause to help those in need… That’s Awesome!

Yes, this is a Awesome world and Yes, we have an Awesome God but all to often we are too busy to see it. We are co-creators with God (WOW! Now that’s really Awesome!)

God wants us to live life to the fullest. And to live life to the fullest we have to open our eyes. We need to open our eyes to the needs of others. We need to open our ears to hear the cries of those in need. We need to open our hearts and help them when we can. We need to open our arms and love and embrace ALL peoples of this earth!
We need to open our minds to the possibilities and Grace that God offers us ALL each and every day!

This doesn’t mean that the world will slow down, that there still won’t be too much work to do, and not enough time to do it in… But if we will open ourselves up to an Awesome God we can actually live in the reality of living in an Awesome world, like on earth as it is in heaven, we can see these Awesome Miracles in our Everyday Lives –
Right NOW!

Only God can make a Tree.
How Awesome are Trees?

27 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?

28 “And why do you worry about clothes?
See how the flowers of the field grow.
They do not labor or spin.

29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor
was dressed like one of these.

Matthew 6:27-29

Trees are the oldest living things on this earth! Some of these trees were around before the Birth of Christ! This is unfathomably Awesome!

Trees sustain life on this planet Earth!

Trees and other green plants such as grass convert carbon dioxide into carbohydrates during photosynthesis, releasing oxygen in the process.
– Wikipedia - Now this is really AWESOME!

Amazingly trees grow from small little seeds – so incredibly much smaller than their mature height.

The Parable of the Mustard Seed
The Kingdom of Heaven
30 Again he said, “What shall we say the kingdom of God is like, or what parable shall we use to describe it? 31 It is like a mustard seed, which is the smallest of all seeds on earth. 32 Yet when planted, it grows and becomes the largest of all garden plants, with such big branches that the birds can perch in its shade.”

Mark 4:30-32

Trees bear Fruit. From bananas, and coconuts, from pecans to avocados, from apples, oranges, pears, and peaches - trees give nourishment to all of God’s creatures! AWESOME!

As technologically advanced as we think we are most of our homes today are still built with a framework of wood! And just think all of our paper comes from trees and plants! Think of all of the clothes that are made from Cotton plants? This is Awesome when you think about it!

Trees provide shelter and homes for countless birds, animals, and even insects! Trees provide us with shade in the summer and deciduous trees lose their leaves in the autumn to provide extra warmth to us from the sun in wintertime! This is Awesome how trees care for us!

Even when trees lose their leaves this adds protection to plants and creatures below! When the tree leaves decompose they add nutrients to the soil. Even when a tree dies we often use the firewood to heat our homes and to keep us warm! – Amazing – Awesome!

Trees take care of us in many ways: clean air to breathe, food to eat, give us shelter, protect us from nature’s elements, clothes to wear, revitalize the soil, and gives us fire for warmth, and for cooking!
How Awesome are trees?

How often do we pass by and see trees and give them little notice?
Can we imagine how differently our lives would be if it were not for trees? Sometime take a good close look at a tree. Its’ roots and its’ bark can tell you the trees story. Look at the veins of a tree leaf. Take a look at the veins in your hands. Do you see a connection?

Yes, Trees are Awesome! Trees are a wonder of God’s handiwork.
Trees are a blessing to us. Trees are an Amazing Awesome Miracle in our Everyday Lives!

Joyce Kilmer. 1886–1918

I THINK that I shall never see
A poem lovely as a tree.

A tree whose hungry mouth is prest
Against the sweet earth's flowing breast;

A tree that looks at God all day,
And lifts her leafy arms to pray;

A tree that may in summer wear
A nest of robins in her hair;

Upon whose bosom snow has lain;
Who intimately lives with rain.

Poems are made by fools like me,
But only God can make a tree.

"The Giving Tree" by Shel Silverstein is a wonderful story about a tree in the life of a young boy as he ages into an older man; all of the sacrifices that the tree had made for the man throughout his lifetime!

The Tale of Three Trees Retold by Angela Elwell Hunt and Illustrations by Tim Jonke is a beautiful story for both children and adults about the life, ministry, persecution, crucifixion, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. This is a beautiful tale to be told anytime but especially at Christmas and Easter.

Miracles in Our Everyday Lives!

Life can be dull, a life of drudgery when we overlook the everyday miracles in our lives. Too often we want life to be filled with those “A-ha” moments. But most of our life is not filled with “A-ha” moments. Most of the time we live in “Ordinary Time”; not Christmas and Easter. Somehow when we were children we were able to recognize “Everyday Miracles” in our Everyday Lives better than when we become adults.

As a child there is nothing more wondrous that than to blow a Dandelion’s snowball of seeds. We blow the fluffy snowball and the seeds drift off in a kind of a dance and float away. Somehow I imagine God blowing on a similar snowball of stars, the stars drift off and float away creating new galaxies. (This is a metaphor; NOT a fundamentalist belief!)

A Dandelion is a beautiful little flower that grows a magnificent tower snowball of seeds. But as we get older… the Dandelion becomes a weed. Somehow we lose the awesomeness of this little flower.

When we were children watching an inchworm bobble up and down is Awesome. What child could resist having the inchworm crawl across their hand from one finger to another, one hand to the other? But as we get older… it’s time to get out the Diazinon pesticide.

When we were children fireflies were a miracle flying in the night with their little lights blinking bright. The fireflies would fill the air. What child could resist of catching fireflies in a jar. And then when it was time to go in, parents would insist that we let them go.

Another Kind of Everyday Miracles

Sometimes at the grocery store you may see a mom with a young child sitting in the cart. Usually when I see this sight it is just one more person, one more buggy before me in the checkout line. But sometimes God opens my eyes to really see. Sometimes I have the ability to see the same picture but in a different light (Apart from God I can do Nothing!
- John 15:5).

Maybe I see a smile between them, and all of a sudden I see it most clearly! I see compassion and love shining brilliantly, brightly, warm, and radiantly. WOW! It’s like looking through God’s eyes… but this is what we can often see, if only we, would open our eyes and see.

Maybe I see a similar picture but a different story. Again God gives me eyes to see. Another mother and child in the shopping cart but this mom is looking in her pocket book and scrimping for change. Her cart is only filled with milk, peanut butter, and bread. This is all she has and all she can get, but how far will the milk, peanut butter, and bread... how far will they last?

There is relief on her face as she has enough money to pay the cashier; this battle has been won – but the war of hunger, poverty, and debt keeps waging on. She hopes and prays that she has enough strength to fight the next battle.

This time I look closely. I see “worry lines” etched upon her young face.
I see that “almost a tear” of fear and insecurity written on her face.
But what can I do? Should I stand back in a disconnected indifferent fear? Do I try to bury and hide my humanity; ‘Love for our Neighbor”? Or can I muster up the courage to offer a smile, a kind word, or even a helping hand?

Maybe just a smile will help, or just a kind word, or even if we dare, a helping hand. This too is a Miracle in our Everyday Lives. We can see this and much more if we will just open our eyes!

Christianity is much more than what we believe; Christianity is helping those in need! Christianity is helping others with good deeds!

People are NOT placed into our lives for us to "walk-around" or worse yet "walkover." People are placed into our lives for us to make a "difference" and also for these people to make a "difference" in our lives… if we will just… open our eyes!

You can now see that we please God by what we do
and not only by what we believe.

What Good Am I?
By Bob Dylan

What good am I if I'm like all the rest
If I just turn away when I see how you're dressed
If I shut myself off so I can't hear you cry
What good am I?

What good am I if I know and don't do
If I see and don't say, if I look right through you
If I turn a deaf ear to the thunder in the sky
What good am I?

What good am I while you softly weep
And I hear in my head what you say in your sleep
And I freeze in the moment like the rest who don't try
What good am I?

What good am I then to others and me
If I've had every chance and yet still fail to see
If my hands are tied, must I not wonder within
Who tied them and why, and where must I have been?

What good am I if I say foolish things
And I laugh in the face of what sorrow brings
And I just turn my back when you silently die
What good am I?

When Jacob awoke from his sleep, he thought,
“Surely the LORD is in this place,
and I was not aware of it.”

Genesis 28:16

Altar in the World by Barbara Brown Taylor

From simple practices such as walking, working, and getting lost to deep meditation on topics like prayer and pronouncing blessings, Barbara Brown Taylor reveals concrete ways to discover the sacred in the small things we do and see.

Something as ordinary as hanging clothes on a clothesline becomes an act of devotion if we pay attention to what we are doing and take time to attend to the sights, smells, and sounds around us. Making eye contact with the cashier at a grocery store becomes a moment of true human connection. Allowing yourself to get lost leads to new discoveries.

Under Taylor’s expert guidance, we come to question conventional distinctions between the sacred and the secular, learning that no physical act is too earthbound or too humble to become a path to the divine.

As we incorporate these practices into our daily lives, we begin to discover altars everywhere we go, in nearly everything we do.
