Sinners Prayer

That if you confess with your mouth,
“Jesus is Lord,”
and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead,
you will be saved.
For it is with your heart
that you believe and are justified,
and it is with your mouth
that you confess and are saved.

Romans 10:9-10

To accept this great gift of salvation, to be Saved, all you have to do is believe with all your heart and confess with your mouth this short prayer:

Dear God,

I am a sinner. I am sorry for my sins.

Please forgive me.

I believe that Jesus Christ is your Son.

I believe that Jesus Christ died for my sins.

I want to invite Him into my life.

I want to trust Him as my Savior

and follow Him as my Lord,

from this day forward and forevermore.

In Jesus’ name.

Amen

Sinner's Prayer "Then" and "NOW!"

When I first came to Christ, one meaningful prayer was the “Sinner’s Prayer.” This prayer was adequate and sufficient for my first baby-steps into Christianity. But now, over a decade later, I find the “Sinner’s Prayer” to be lacking in my more mature, discerning faith. This does not mean that “I have arrived” or anything; it’s just the natural progression of a growing relationship with God.

11When I was a child, I used to speak like a child,
think like a child, reason like a child;
when I became a man, I did away with childish things.
12For now we see in a mirror dimly,
but then face to face; now I know in part,
but then I will know fully just as I also have been fully known.
13But now faith, hope, love, abide these three;
but the greatest of these is love.

Corinthians 13:11-13 NASB

There is no fear in love.
1 John 4:16-21

Somehow in the "Sinner’s Prayer” to me NOW sounds more like “we should be fearful of God; instead of seeing God as a “Loving Father” as in the The Parable of the Lost Son: and in the The Parable of the Workers in the Vineyard:

In my humble opinion we do not see God’s Great LOVE,MERCY, and Grace in the “Sinner’s Prayer.”

Be merciful,
just as your Father is merciful.
Luke 6:36

Be Compassionate
as God is Compassionate.
Luke 6:36

...And what does the LORD require of you?
To act justly and to love mercy
and to walk humbly with your God.
Micah 6:8

MERCY:: Note how this understanding fits the common understanding of the heaven and hell Christianity. Presupposes that we’ve done wrong, God will punish, Jesus will intercede for our forgiveness. Marcus J. Borg suggests we exchange the word “mercy” for the word “compassion”: this word does not pre-suppose a situation of wrongdoing.

Which word to use? Compassion or mercy? Depends on the context. If there’s a situation where there is a broken agreement, wrong-doing, etc. then yes, use the word “mercy”. But in many contexts, this word gives us the idea that there has been wrongdoing and that there is a punitive God who is ready to punish. Compassion—feeling with, feeling the suffering of others, acting in accord with these feelings.

In both Hebrew and Aramaic—associated with the word for womb, and the feelings a mother has for the children in the womb.

Adopted Children of God

We are the Adopted Children of God; Children of Light.

4For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love 5he predestined us to be adopted as his sons (and daughters) through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will— 6to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves.
Ephesians 1:4-6

Believing did not originally mean believing in a set of doctrines or teachings; in both the Greek and Latin its roots mean “to give one’s heart to.” The “heart” is the self at the deepest level.
It is an image of the Christian life not primarily as believing or being good but a Relationship with God.
- Marcus J. Borg "Meeting Jesus Again for the First Time."

Relationship with God is...
"More Like Falling in Love."

Somehow for me just as in the song by Jason Gray it was “More Like Falling in Love” A Relationship with God! Please see video and lyrics below:

“More Like Falling in Love” By Jason Gray

We please God by what we do
and not only what we believe.
James 2:24 CEV

It's More Like Falling in Love...

"More Like Falling In Love" Lyrics By Jason Gray

Give me rules, I will break them
Show me lines, I will cross them
I need more than a truth to believe
I need a truth that lives, moves, and breathes
To sweep me off my feet, it’s gotta be

More like falling in love than something to believe in
More like losing my heart than giving my allegiance

Caught up, called out, come take a look at me now
It’s like I’m falling, oh
It’s like I’m falling in love

Give me words, I’ll misuse them
Obligations, I’ll misplace them
‘Cause all religion ever made of me
Was just a sinner with a stone tied to my feet
It never set me free, it’s gotta be

More like falling in love than something to believe in
More like losing my heart than giving my allegiance

Caught up, called out, come take a look at me now
It’s like I’m falling, oh
It’s like I’m falling in love, love, love

Deeper and deeper
It was love that made me a believer
In more than a name, a faith, a creed
Falling in love with Jesus brought the change in me,
it’s gotta be

More like falling in love than something to believe in
More like losing my heart than giving my allegiance

Caught up, called out, come take a look at me now
It’s like I’m falling, oh
It’s like I’m falling in love

Being a Christian is much more than a laundry list of things
that you have to believe in to be a Christian!

This is NOW how I interpret the Sinner’s Prayer…
It’s More Like Falling in Love… that’s Relationship:

Dear Lord,

You know my darkest secrets;
the darkest corners of my mind.
And yet you have loved me before my birth;
You have loved me even before Creation.

In God's Great Love, he has Adopted us to be his Children;
"Children of God."
"Children of Light."

I am imperfect; I have made mistakes.
I have hurt my loved ones and myself.

I am so sorry for my sins.
At times I despise myself.

I cannot keep going on like this!
My life has to change.
I need you Lord, in my life and in my heart.

And Lord, I need Help!
I cannot do this by myself.
I don't know how!

I pray sincerely to turn my life around.
I pray to know your Son; Jesus Christ;
And to follow Him.

I don’t know how to get started.
Please Help Me!

I know that I have done nothing to deserve your Love,
Forgiveness, Grace, and Mercy (Compassion.)
Help me to understand the your Love and Grace
are Gifts from you that I did not deserve, earn, or merit.

Please Lord, Help Me from this day and every day forward.

Amen

Dear God of Endings and New Beginnings,
in spite of what we do or do not do,
God Greets us and Welcomes us,
Inviting us into Relationship.
Allow God’s Forgiveness to become real in YOU
and in all of us together.
AMEN
