We love because he first loved us.

1 John 4:19

When I first read this scripture “We love because he first loved us.”
From 1 John 4:19 I didn’t pay that much attention to it… I understood it as “We love Christ because Christ loved us too, also, first…
OK, no big revelation… Jesus loves us (me)!

This is the wonder of reading scripture! You may read some scripture time and time again until it becomes mundane… No big deal! But then you read it again and this time it strikes you… you understand more deeply, it’s an “A-ha” moment, a real revelation! This is one reason why we should always be looking for deeper meaning in Scripture!

What I have come to understand is that God has loved me from the beginning of time. OK I have already understood that. But the real revelation is that God loved me – way before I ever knew him. God loved me when I wasn’t looking for Him. God loved me when I was a stranger, a wanderer, an alien in exile. Yes, God loved me when I was a sinner.
God loves me even though He knows every little dirty secret about me! Nothing is hidden from God – Nothing! God knows everything in my life that I have done wrong, every person that I have hurt, every lie, every transgression, Everything!

And yet God loves me anyway!!!

God loves me and God loves YOU!
And there is Nothing YOU can do about it!

Yes, God loves US just like a loving, caring, forgiving parent full of Love and Grace. Think of all YOU have done in your life… we are ALL imperfect. Think of all of your mistakes that you have made! Think of ALL of the people YOU have hurt! Think of all of the “words" that you wish that you could take back!

Yes there are consequences to our bad behavior… But we have HOPE to do and to do better in Christ. We can find forgiveness and solace in God’s Forgiveness, Mercy, and Grace. We are “Forgiven” in Christ! We are made “Right” with God through Christ! Being in a right relationship with God is Salvation! We are brought into a living-loving relationship with God! God is brought new into our lives! We are truly made into a new Creation in Christ!

Yes, we truly love Christ because He knew us first, forgives us,
and Christ Loves Us… And there is Nothing We Can Do About It!

Another way of looking at it is like a woman (or a man) who longs to have a child; who loves this child before they are even born. And then when the woman becomes pregnant, the parents to be already loves this baby before it is born. God loves us “Eternally” before the beginning of time, before all of Creation, before we are born, and all through the days of our lives… the good days and the bad days. God is with us during our darkest of times, God is our constant companion… even at the moment of death. God is with us Past! – Present! – And All Eternal Future!

And as a parent we long for grandchildren. We tell our children “we want grandchildren!” We love these Grandchildren long before they are ever born!

Yes, Jesus the Triune God loved us first and truly we love God.

“Father, I want those you have given me
to be with me where I am,
and to see my glory,
the glory you have given me
because you loved me before the creation of the world."

John 17:24
