Mark 12:41-44 NIV

41Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. 42But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins ]worth only a fraction of a penny.

43Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. 44They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on.”

Matthew Henry's Commentary: The Widow's Offering

The Widow’s Mite

Let’s look at the background of the widow in Bible times: · A widow was a woman without a husband due to the husband’s death or by divorce. · Widows were dependant on the charity from the Temple and from Temple worshipers (where they would “beg” for money.) The Temple was a good place to beg for hopefully worshipers were in a “giving spirit” after worship. Some (but definitely NOT all) worshipers wanted recognition for their giving out of PRIDE!

The Pharisees in the Temple were the ones, which “devour” the widows and their homes:

38As he taught, Jesus said, "Watch out for the teachers of the law. They like to walk around in flowing robes and be greeted in the marketplaces, 39and have the most important seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets. 40They devour widows' houses and for a show make lengthy prayers.
Such men will be punished most severely."

Mark 12:38-40 and then continues to the Widow’s Offering.

45While all the people were listening, Jesus said to his disciples, 46"Beware of the teachers of the law. They like to walk around in flowing robes and love to be greeted in the marketplaces and have the most important seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets.
Luke 20:45-46

Something to Think About?

The Pharisees in the Temple were the ones, which “devour” the widows and their homes. The widow gave all she had to the Temple – to the corrupt Temple leaders! She gave her “offering” to the very people who had cast her out of her very home; the very people who had made her destitute!!! Why would she give her “last penny” to the very to help support these corrupt, illegitimate officials in the Temple???

Many of the Pharisees were corrupt and were illegitimate (they had been appointed by the Roman governor) BUT their unfaithfulness did NOT affect the Widow’s devotion and integrity! The Widow continued to have Hope and Faith in God. The Widow gave the “very best,” the Widow gave ALL that she had to the LORD!

In the Gospel of Mark this comparison of the Pharisees and the Widow’s Mite sites the HUGE difference in the Widow’s humble devotion and her humble Mite (penny) and the pretentious Pharisees giving. The Pharisees could put in large pretentious offering from the ill-gotten gains from selling the Widow’s home. The money that the Pharisees were putting into the offering came from destitute, poor, homeless women!

Widows and the Poor would lose their homes (Unfortunately much like today’s times 2009-2010 Recession) due to owing high taxes, back taxes, exorbitant high interest, defaulting on loans for food, etc., which was against the Law of Moses. Property could not be sold and the Levites the priestly class could not own property, But the Pharisees would repossess homes and property by circumventing the Laws; disobeying the Laws – DISOBEYING GOD!!!

The Widow had Devotion to God that would not lose Hope, Devotion that would NOT be discouraged or dissuaded. The Widow was sincere in her Heart; the Pharisees were not!

“Such men will be punished most severely."

Mark 12:40

Political Commentary

On My Soapbox

I got the expression “On My Soapbox” from our dear friend, Olyn.
Olyn would often use this expression when he had “something to say” his commentary.

From 2009 – 2010 greedy, illegitimate, corrupt “BANKERS” devoured exorbitant unsustainable mortgages for millions of hard working families who sincerely wanted to purchase a home.

Many of these good people lost their homes; their homes were devoured by the Bankers. The Bankers “devoured” these people’s homes while the corrupt Bankers gave themselves exorbitant MULTI-BILLION DOLLAR BONUSES!!!!!!

And our tax dollars (our offerings) the tax dollars from the evicted homeowners actually pays for the Banker’s MULTI-BILLION DOLLAR BONUSES!!!!!!
